This presentation will take a look at the history of PDF from proprietary specification of Adobe Systems to its current form as the open standard ISO 32000. The process that it went through and how this change impacts the free software community. In addition we will look at the various other ISO PDF standards - PDF/A (for archiving), PDF/X (for prepress), PDF/E (for engineering), PDF/UA (for universal accessibility) and PDF/VT (for variable and transactional printing).

The presentation will focus on both technical as well as procedural aspects of the various PDF standards.

Based on an article in Linux Journal some years ago, I've been using XSL and PHP to transform Inkscape XML into PDFs using dynamic data generated on the fly on a webserver - this lightning talk explains the process.
